Newton vs. Leibniz by EJWeir Newton vs. Leibniz by EJWeir
Newton and Leibniz both came up with calculus independently, and then had a huge row over which one of them did it first. In the end, Newton got credited with its discovery and Leibniz is still credited with certain areas of it (like the product rule) and his notation is used more often.
They probably never actually fought like this, but I like to imagine them having it out with each other. :D

Oh, and although Leibniz is the most piratical-looking mathematician ever, I'd still have been rootin' for Newton. ^_^

I prefer Leibnizian notation when working with calculus therefore I side with Leibniz x3

Im glad Leibniz is bottom and you know what i actually read somewhere that Leibniz was shown a copy of "Newton's" calculus through one of his publishers and then went on to develop his own approach. Im not sure how accurate that is, it couldve been perpetuated out of paranoia (typical) by Newton but yeah...just thought id add that to the mix.
I obviously root for Newton too (HIGH FIVE!!!). He was also surprisingly aggressive and could take out any bullies even though he had a short stature. WOOT WOOT. Not just a pretty face haha.

Yeah, Newton was a fighter. As far as who developed it is concerned, both Newton and Leibniz developed it entirely on their own. By the time Leibniz saw a copy of Newton's "De Analysi" he had already figured out everything in it, and what he saw in it wasn't much, anyway. Newton was just a much better fighter than Leibniz, not to mention controlling the Royal Society and having decades to put together evidence. And as far as the notation itself goes, Leibniz is the one whose notation is still in use today, since he actually made the symbols for it. Newton once made fun of Leibniz for "limiting" himself with notation.

Oh, by the way, this picture is wonderful and I'm showing it to my class tomorrow.
